I installed Mandrake on my laptop, using the installation program to resize my NTFS XP partition.

One other option is to boot up with the PM cdrom. You can resize your XP partition that way. This can save you the time and effort of installing and creating a PM boot disk.

( I had to do the latter at work, because I lost the registration number for the PM disk. )

Then i installed 10.1 and it works fine in the beginning with basic installation, once i
reboot the system it lost his graphical interface.

I didn't catch what video card your computer uses. If you start in init level 3 (for mandrake, suse, redhat, etal, this is the networked/multiuser/console run level) what error messages do you see?

You can run the Mandrake setup program for video, it is called 'XFdrake'.

If you still have problems, consider first changing the video driver to 'vesa' which is a generic driver that handles decent resolutions, but will be unaccelerated. From there, you can work on getting the monitor settings correct.

You can try to select your monitor in XFdrake. If that doesn't help, try using the X program 'gtf' to calculate modelines to use.

Most linux installation programs come with disk partitioners that are fairly easy to use, for example the disk partitioner in rh9.

He mentioned video problems on a Dell in post #17. However, I didn't address the vibrating problem. If it is drive thrashing, adding more memory may help.

Then the vibration isn't due to disk thrashing. Is your cdrom a bit warped? I once had a cd drive on my desktop that would take off like a jet engine, and made a lot of noise but It didn't vibrate. Is this an older laptop. I'm wondering if a couple mounting screws are missing.

For computers, defects usually make themselves apparent right away. Especially for the non-mechanical parts of the computer. If this happens all of the time on every cdrom disc, then it sounds like a defect to me. A disc that has a slight warp can have the same effect however, so try different discs to check.

Being it is a new laptop, I would contact Dell support. I does sound like a defect to me. My boss has a Dell Latitude and it doesn't vibrate like you describe.
