X201 brightness keys not working
So I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Thinkpad X201...
Most everything works (lock key, volume buttons, etc) with one exception: The brightness keys. Manually going into the power managment dialog and trying to manually change the brightness does not work. Changing brightness works while the bios screen is still up, once Ubuntu boots it fails again. I've Googled around a bit, no one with an X201 seems to have encounted the error, let alone a fix, so I thought I would post here and see if anyone had any ideas... Any help is greatly appreciated... having the brightness stuck at 100% really dings my battery life. |
I had a similar problem recently, what is your hardware setup? If its the same problem, I think we can fix it. :)
Code:
lspci -vvvv |
Cool, thanks a ton!
Output is as follows: Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 02) |
If you add a kernel option to your grub.conf, do you get backlight control?
append: noacpi This is the sort of issue I had too. If this works, then we know a little more about what the problem is. You will lose battery info too, though. So you just want to test out this to see if you get backlight controls. |
Dumb question: Where is grub.conf located? I didn't see anything with that particular name (ru:
Code:
sigma@wopr:~$ sudo locate grub | grep conf |
Are you running a new ubuntu? They changed configuration schemes recently.
You want to modify Code:
/etc/default/grub Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" Code:
update-grub |
Yeah, it's 10.04... you were half right, I do not have a battery indicator, but the brightness keys don't work either...
Edit: The gui element shows up, the brightness "bar" that pops up goes up/down... but the screen stays at the same brightness. |
while still without the battery indicator, in a terminal run:
xbacklight -set 0 this may be an issue that is different from the one I encountered. The solution for me was to add: acpi_osi="Linux" to the grub configuration. You can try that by replacing: Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noacpi" |

Sorry, wish I knew more. I would say take a look for kernel bugs and if there isn't one report one. They will do their best to work with you on it. Good luck!

Here's a good portal to X200 information:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X200 And here's information about acpi: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Thinkpad-acpi acpi controls power and also the various special Thinkpad buttons. thinkpad-acpi is the name of the kernel module. |
