X screwey on startup, fine after killed & started again

When I start up my computer, and GDM loads, for some reason my X goes all screwey (random looking colours and what not). If I kill X, when GDM restarts it looks fine. Anyone ever have this issue and resolve it? It only started doing this after I switch from the nv driver to the official NVidia one.

Laptop: Dell Inspiron 2650, 1.6, 512MB, Geforce2 Go, NVidia drivers: 9629.
