Works on Kubuntu but not Suse is there a way to port over..?

Hello...

I've got a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo A1645 laptop and have recently just instaleld kubuntu on it, which all seems to work fine... (wireless will work with ndiswrapper, but thats not the issue just now).

I've also tried Suse 9.3 and Suse 10 but when these distro's are installed, my ethernet and soundcard dont work.

Ethernet is a SiS900 Fast Ethernet and soundcard is SiS SI7012.

My question is can I find out what makes it work in kubuntu and then use this to make it work for Suse..??

Thanks in advance...

satinet 02-22-2006 05:57 AM

how are you defining not working? not detected or not configured.

try 'alsaconf' as root for your sounds card (from command line).

what's the output of 'ifconfig -a'

jjmcgee 02-23-2006 03:56 AM

By not working I mean.. When i have had a suse build; ethernet, the card is detected and identified correctly when I configure with IP address details, etc they are accepted.. However, no network connectivity exists, cant ping anything. I've tried with DHCP and hard assigning an IP address, but to no avail.

My soundcard, well again it gets detected and tries to play sound however it's all jumpy. For example the suse start up sound takes 5 mins to play.

ifconfig -a on a suse build, identifies the interface i.e eth0 and the deails I've supplied it.. but only if I dont use dhcp. With dhcp no details are displayed.

I dont have suse installed yet so cant do the output..

jjmcgee 02-23-2006 06:13 PM

ok to confuse matters even more.. I am now currently using a SuSe9.3 LIVE DVD and ethernet is working fine..., wireless will work with ndiswrapper, however my sound card still does not work...

Everything works fine with kubuntu from install.

Does anyone know of anyway I can find out what is being used to control these devices in kubuntu (and this live dvd) and make them work with suse..?? Slowly but surely getting to a point where Ican have windows free laptop !:)

satinet 02-24-2006 02:44 AM

well, on my system the ipw2200 modules are loaded by the kernel.

are they there if you do 'lsmod'??

jjmcgee 02-24-2006 03:34 AM

My Ethernet is: a SiS900 Fast Ethernet adaptor built in.

Will the intel drivers make a difference..?? I'll be booting up laptop soon so will paste output of lspci.

satinet 02-24-2006 04:01 AM

no sorry, i meant teh specific modules for your nic.

jjmcgee 02-24-2006 05:35 AM

here's the details for suse, I'll go boot into kubuntu and provide similar!

comparing both outputs, im looking at the sound section of 'lsmod' controllers

in Kubuntu
snd_intel8x0 30144 3
snd_ac97_codec 72188 1 snd_intel8x0
snd_pcm_oss 46368 0
snd_mixer_oss 16128 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 78344 4 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 21764 2 snd_pcm
snd 48644 10 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer

That seems to be the modules/drivers running the soundcard .. however none of them are in suse...

I'm not sure if this is just because its a Live install, but think its worth a go installing it again and seeing what the outputs are..?

Guess my next question will be, that if the above snd config is what is required in Suse, how do I get this to work...???

lestoil 02-24-2006 06:22 PM

My SW10.2 lsmod with sis900 shows sis900 and mii used by sis900 like your second lsmod. The 1st is missing the mii module.Debian Etch lsmod same ;and same sound chip is used by alsa for both linuxes. Our motherboards are similar.Kubuntu and latest Suse use alsa too. Good luck.

jjmcgee 02-25-2006 05:39 PM

So any idea how to make both modules work in suse..??

lestoil 02-26-2006 11:35 AM

sis900 and mii

Check Suse for what (1)command to use like modprobe mii. (2)In SW one can look in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules to see if there is an mii line listed but with # /sbin infront of the line referencing it. Then one removes the # to make the module available. Suse has it own location for the modules list just like Kubuntu and Debian(/etc/modules).
Hopefully you wont need to reconfig the kernel or you can upgrade the kernel. Good luck.

jjmcgee 02-26-2006 06:31 PM

Thanks for your help so far.. will let you know how I get on, giong to do the SuSe Build later today! :) Here's hoping... ;) Will update on the progress!

Saying that.. im not that fussed now wither I get Suse workign or not, playign around with kubuntu the past week has actually grown on me.. very nice distro!
