Woman in Distress--Wirelss

Setup:
NEC Versa SX; Redhat 9; proxim orinoco gold comobo card

Problem:
The crap won't work!!!!!!!!

Configuration(A Bit backwards but hold tight)

cardctl ident
->Shows socket 1 in use by my wireless lan card

I included the above in the following:

/etc/pcmcia/config
card " AR5001-0000-0000"
manfid 0x0271, 0x0012
bind "orinoco_cs"

*My modules won't load at start up.

/var/log/messages (startup)

cardmgr executing: 'insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-20.9/pcmcia/hermes.o
/etc/hotplug/pci.agent: ...no modules for PCI slot 01:00:0
cardmgr executing: 'insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-20.9/pcmcia/orinoco.0
cardmgr executing: 'insmod /lib/modules/2.4.20-20.9/pcmcia/pcmcia/orinoco_cs.0
cardmgr: get dev info on socket 1 failed: Resource temporarily unavailable

*Card won't stay loaded in network config. After reboot Hardware is no where to be seen!
*When I insert the card, I get 2 good beeps and 1 bad(try again) beep.

Where do I got from here? Which redhat kernel works with proximo orinoco?

Thanks a Bunch

Well, my question is: Are you tied to RedHat? I really don't know about how to make wireless work in RH.... That was one fo the reasons I switched to Mandrake.... wireless just works. I've got an orrinco built on card... and it works great.... better transfer rates/distances under mandrake than windows....

So, I suggest Mandreake 9.1 or 9.2 RC2.

Where do I get the download package from? Does mandrake have some of the similar packages that red hat has?ethereal etc?

Can I get snort to work with Mandrake?

Its not an Orinoco card.

Proxim purchased Orinoco and started marketing different chipsets under its brand name. This is not the good old rock sold Lucent/Orinoco chipset we have come to know and love. This is an entirely different beastie.

This is either an atheros chipset or a Intersil Prism Duet card, not to be confused with a normal old vanilla Prism2 card. What is the exact model of the card?

Drivers for either are available, in various states of working, but no distro at all comes with these onboard.

Cheers,

Finegan

I should have just kept looking, heck I had the manfid, its an atheros 802.11g/a/b card, the atheros ar5212 chipset.

As far as I can tell this is covered by a number of projects... 2 it seems:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/madwifi

http://team.vantronix.net/ar5k/

The former of which seems to be much more current. From what I read of the madwifi project, I think this thing is a cardbus card, which would make sense as to why you are getting three beeps, the first is for pcmcia, the second for the cardbus cb module getting loaded and the third for the failed orinoco_cs load...

Hmm, I'de check through the madwifi gear and see if you can get that to work, the module it creates seems to work on a straight insmod or modprobe, the README pretty well explains it.
