wm not filling whole screen

Hi, I just installed Xfree86 and everything is viewed well in mode 1024x768 but I find the fonts a bit small to use with that setting. So I tried using 800x600 but the window manager dosent fill up the whole screen there is a gap about 2cm on the bottom and right side of the monitor, and also the text is a bit blurred but still readable. Just wondering if anyone can give me some tips at what I should be looking at to fix this (I have tried different modes). My laptop is a ibm thinkpad 600e. Video Card: Neomagic Magic Media 256AV video chipset with 2.5MB of SGRAM. Display: 13.3 in. TFT active matrix 24-bit Max reso. 1024x768. Horiz sync 30-64, Vert refresh 50-100.

Also is there a way I can get the 1024x768 mode to load with bigger fonts, and if how?

Thanks

www.linux-laptop.net can help.

Here is a link to the IBM page. There are a number of listings for your model.

Thanks XavierP for the link but I have already looked through those but I will have a second look anyway. But if anyone else has any suggestions they would be appreciated. Thanks again :)

Possible solution - Some laptops have a setting that can be reset when doing a new install. Located in bios, it asks if you want to stretch the screen to fill. Just a possible suggestion.
