wireless with realtek pcmcia

Hello,

Using Debian, kernel 2.4.20-xfs

I'm having a problem installing my realtek pcmcia card.
Here's what I did:
I got the Realtek dirver (rtl8180_24x) from the Realtek website. I installed it by: insmod -f rtl8180_24x.
Then I was able to see my card with: ifconfig -a. The interface is called wlan0. When I do a ifconfig wlan0 up, I can't get a dhcp adress by using netcardconfig. If I do
iwpriv wlan0 enable, the link LED of my pcmcia card goes on.
If I then do a ping ........ My computer crashes. So the command iwpriv makes it highly unstable for some reason.
I also can't lode my driver at boot because I can't modprobe the realtek driver. This because I can't force with it.

Please help my out here.

Guillermo

This driver is largely complete voodoo. Everything seems to be just luck with it, but here's the thread that covers it:

I tried the thread but I still got the same problem. Can't get a connection with my acces point. And the iwpriv command makes my computer unstable, so when I do my first iwpriv command my computer is certain to crash within 5 minutes.

Can anyone else help me out with my card, I have a problem for two weeks now.

I posted this message to Realtek's technical support. I will post the reply as soon as I have it.

Hello,

I can't get my driver to work. I'm using gcc 3x. When I do a insmod -f
rtl8180_24x the driver's interface is visible at ifconfig -a.
So then I do a ifconfig wlan0 up. After this I do a iwpriv wlan0 enable (after some iwpriv wlan_para), then the lights of my card go on. However I can't connect to my accespoint. Is there perhaps something wrong with driver (from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...eyword=rtl8180) because when I do: iwpriv wlan0 enable my computer (compaq notebook evo n160) always crashes within 5 minutes.

please help me out with this.

I will also put this message and your reply on the www.linuxquestions.org website, so other users can learn from your reply as well.

Cheers,

Guillermo Kardolus

I don't know what to tell you man, the driver is pure voodoo, clean compiles of the same kernel .config with the same gcc and glibc on two different laptops will yield different results. The only hope for a stable driver is if they open source the 3/4 of it that is binary only. You can try a hand compile... that's about all that is working for the poor guys that get those crash bugs.

Cheers,

Finegan
