wireless distance cut in half?
I have installed kubuntu 8.10 on the laptop my wife uses, a Toshiba Satellite A105-S2071. Using Windows, the wireless would reach from one end of the house to the other. But now the wireless starts cutting out intermittently and I think it has something to do with the distance.... but Im not sure.
So the network manager is KNetworkManager. Under System->Hardware Drivers I have the following item listed: Support for Atheros 802.11 wireless LAN card. Other than that I really don't know what other info to provide or how to get the info as I am relatively new to linux. I need to get this wireless working correctly. Any help would be appreciated. Also, the clock is in military format; how can I change that. |
Or your neighbor just got wireless and they are using the same channel or the channel next to the one you are using..
iwlist ath0 scan - to check for other nearby access points. It could be related to incorrect antenna settings since hte madwifi driver does NOT automatically detect this setting.. Take a look at UserDocs/AntennaDiversity. You'll want to disable transmit diversity if you only have one antenna connected. The other item in their FAQ suggests if you are having performance issue s that you get the latest version of the madwifi driver before asking questions through the support channels. http://madwifi-project.org/wiki/UserDocs/GettingMadwifi |
unfortunately this didnt help. I am still getting 25 to 30 out of 70 when i do the scan. Any other ideas?

I had a similar problem with Ubuntu on my Compaq Presario C751NR. Oddly though, when I put Mandriva on it, I got an ENORMOUS boost in distance compared to my friends using Windows PCs. Try making sure all of your software is up to date, and try using the software "wifi-radar" to scan for and connect to wireless networks. It seems to work better than the built-in KDE network manager.
