Solved?? but

Well, I took the HP-17, back to Best Buy/Geek Squad. The tech was very nice, and after an hour or two, didn't charge me,informing me that there is no graphic driver or Wireless driver developed for Linux Mint 18.2/Hardware yet. This closed the case, but I need to locate drivers (hardware ) for this Laptop.

How is that accomplished?

Thanks you for all you help, and apologize for all the wasted time.

Bob

No wireless driver I might agree with. But there is definitely a GPU driver. Although you might have to run Arch or Debian Testing or Sid to have it. Plus enable the non-free, universe, or whatever parts of the repos to get it. It's amdgpu for my hp 15-ba053nr.

$ dpkg -l | grep -i amdgpu
Code:
ii libdrm-amdgpu1:amd64 2.4.84-2 amd64 Userspace interface to amdgpu-specific kernel DRM services -- runtime
ii  xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu              1.4.0-1                           amd64        X.Org X server -- AMDGPU display driver
$ lsmod | grep -i amd
Code:
edac_mce_amd           28672  0
amdkfd                139264  1
amdgpu               1368064  3
ttm                    94208  1 amdgpu
drm_kms_helper        151552  1 amdgpu
drm                   348160  5 amdgpu,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit           16384  1 amdgpu
mfd_core               16384  1 amdgpu
$ lsb_release -a

To Shadow 7 wireless connection

I have been going back over the conversation. Trying to understand what has happened??

Ran the following as instructed.

inux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009: /usr/src/linux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009/include/dt-bindings/pinctrl/am43xx.h
linux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009: /usr/src/linux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009/include/linux/mv643xx.h
linux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009: /usr/src/linux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009/include/linux/mv643xx_eth.h
linux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009: /usr/src/linux-kvm-headers-4.4.0-1009/include/linux/mv643xx_i2c.h
openocd: /usr/share/openocd/scripts/board/ti_am43xx_evm.cfg
bob@bob-HP-Laptop-17-bs0xx ~ $ apt-file list firmware-brcm80211
bob@bob-HP-Laptop-17-bs0xx ~ $

Since I see no response to apt-file list firm Assume that I must find what?

Still digging, more and more confused.

Firmware tends to be in the non-main parts of a distro. You have to enable those extras manually.

$ man sources.list

As far as your wireless, I think my new HP laptop has that chipset too. And I can verify (so far) that there is no wifi driver, at least in the mainline kernel tree or github version(s) of the driver. Yet. Further complicated by the ethernet driver being as flakey as most wifi drivers would otherwise be. But I'm no stranger to this ball field and have my drawer of dongles. It only took about twenty minutes after opening the box to be booted into my regular linux USB sticks. Most of which was slapping around the UEFI until it "allow"ed it.

I got the hp 15-bw053od last week. It probably has the same wifi as yours, and it does not currently have linux drivers. And the r8169 ethernet is a bit flakey too. It's been a really long time since I've had issues using a networking device in linux. Literally over a decade since I had to use stuff like ndiswrapper.

So, has this come to a stopping place, or how does one know if a new driver arrives that solves this problem? I'm going to look up ndsw(?) wrapper see if I understand that. Interesting. Thanks for the assist.

Once a driver exist and is installed and in use, then $(ifconfig -a) or $(ip link show) will have an interface name that starts with "w". For the rtl8723de --- [10ec:d723] --- that is on my bw053od, it's slated for Q4 2017 (soon), but tbh, I'd expect by tax season 2018.

I'm still working on the ndiswrapper option, the version that ships with the distro doesn't compile. I'll fiddle a bit more with the latest sources (if they truly are) from sourceforge. Although I'm not hopeful since ndiswrapper was meant more for XP era APIs and we're several generations past those.
