That notebook is simply to new for 10.04, even with a 3.0 kernel. Try Ubuntu 12.04 LTS or 12.10 (released today with kernel 3.5).

Ok upgraded to 12.10 sound now works right out of the box however the wireless is still not working it will not let me enable wireless and i am almost postive it is because the wireless is enabled through windows via the f12 key the light is orange right now I have tried to pres and hold i have tried to press fn plus f12 no luck i am at a loss

the rfkill list command is

Quote:
0: hp-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
1: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
it does not matter wether I use block or unblock it stays the same as above this includes using the sudo command as well

if i try to use the "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" command I get

Quote:
SIOCSIFFLAGS: Operation not possible due to RF-kill
Output for sudo lshw -C network:

Quote:
wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=ath9k driverversion=3.5.0-17-generic firmware=N/A latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bgn
resources: irq:16 memory:f0200000-f027ffff memory:f0400000-f040ffff
So I know the driver is there so it has to be the button to turn on and off

well i do not know how or why but for some reason on a reboot it all of a sudden started working the button works fine as well as the wireless it might have been just a fluk or bug in the install that just took a few reboots to work it self out but anyways it all works thanks for the tip about upgradeing to 12.10
