Okay so i bought my mom a laptop and i'm installing ubuntu on it.
For some reason after i made the partition and installed ubuntu sometimes it will try and boot but windows just boots over it, more frustrating is that when i go into the boot manager or bios it doesn't show the partition, + when i try and install ubuntu again via usb it says that ubuntu is already on the partition.
The windows version is windows 10.
In your bios tab over to boot order, make os boot manager first in boot order, highlight os boot manager enter, use f5 f6 keys to move ubuntu to top, f10 key to save, escspe out, exit and save. It is something like that not at my laptop to double check this

@colorpurple21859 It doesn't show ubuntu in the os boot manager, it only shows windows. Unless i missed something, my computer isn't detectng the partition despite ubuntu setup picking it up.
We have an HP that does similar - unpredictably will boot to Win even though Linux Mint is the default in the UEFI boot list - maybe after a "hiccup". We just live with it.
On reboot F10 (I think) will bring up the UEFI boot list - then just use efibootmgr to set Linux as the default again. Works fine until the next occurrence.
at what point during the installation does it say this?
When you get to the part where it says installation type it says this " This computer currently has Windows boot manager and Ubuntu 18.04 LTS on it. what would you like to do? "
And when i get to the option where i can install ubuntu alongside windows it says "Erase Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS and reinstall"
run boot-repair and see if it will fix your system. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-Repair
If not post the info script generated by boot-repair so someone here can figure out what is happening.
What options do you have on boot? On an HP laptop I have, I need to first hit the Esc key then the F10 key to access the BIOS and go to the System Configuration tab and under that will be the boot options. Is yours similar? If so, go to OS Boot Manager under Boot Options and highlight OS Boot Manager and hit the Enter key. You should see entries for both windows and Ubuntu. If you see Ubuntu there, arrow down to highlight it and hit the Enter key, then the F6 key to move it up in order and then F10/Enter to Save.
If you don't have these options, post what you do see. If ubuntu doesn't show there you need to reinstall Grub from Ubuntu as windows won't boot it?
Also, is your windows UEFI? That is the standard for windows 10 but may not be. And did you install Ubuntu EFI?

Yea windows is UFEI and i'm pretty sure ubuntu is EFI. I already tried going to the system configuration and it didn't show up, all it showed when i highlighted it was windows boot manager and no ubuntu.
I had to delete known keys for the boot options to show my usb devices, and otherwise keep my bios changes (UEFI) upon reboot. Even though F10 says save and exit, without delete known keys it does NOT save. But my installs are on DOS partitioned drives, not GPT. And do not contain UEFI compliant distros.
