Will a VAIO still boot without an attached monitor?

I have an 800mhz VAIO (with Win 2000 and Slackware 10.2) on it. The monitor is on the fritz and capable of starting a fire (crackles and smells) so I would like to remove the built in monitor and hook up a 17" flatscreen to the VGA adapter on the back. My question is with the Monitor removed will the laptop pass all BIOS checks and boot? I plan on having a monitor attached via the VGA port but I want to make sure it will work with the built in removed before I purchase the extra monitor.

thanks

Pretty much all laptops have monitor setting in their BIOS that allows you to select if you want to use the LCD panel only, VGA monitor only or both. If you change the setting in BIOS to allow for both or VGA monitor only it should boot without any issues.

You might want to make sure it's really the monitor with the crackling and smells...

The monitor piece is what heats up and the picture is distorting so we are fairly sure that is what the problem is. Of course we won't know for sure until we remove the piece and run only with an external monitor.

Do you have a suggestion that might help us pinpoint the issue better?

thanks
