widescreen resolution

I just got a new dell Inspiron 9300 with a 17" widescreen display. I installed gentoo on it and the only widescreen mode i can get is 1440x1028. the screen is a 1920x1200. how i can i make gentoo (gnome) recognize this and use it. i added it to the modes section or whatever in xorg.conf but that didnt work.

There's a discussion of a problem just like yours and it seems installing the right version of the driver will solve it.

i looked at that. it didnt help much. i thnk i fixed it i had to add a modeline but now the refresh rate is 58 it was 60. will this mess anyting up?
