wide screen flat people , have to use windows. HELP
I have a
Packard Bell Laptop
17 inch wide screen
screen resolution 1440x900
80gig hdd
1.7 intel centrino
Mobile Intel 915gm/gms,910gml express chipset family (graphics)
Suse 10
The problem is I see flat people and my pictures and everything is streched out. even when i make the res of the screen 1440x900 and the graphic card the same, even when i change it so the one or the other is 1440x900 still the same thing happens.
Look at the bright side. Seeing flat people is better than seeing dead people.
Just, kidding. You meant fat people I suppose. Do you mean that when you watch videos in the full screen mode, they are stretched? The 16/10 ratio is close to 16:9 which is one of the standard aspect ratios for movies. You might try the anamorphic setting for DVDs and 4:3 for regular videos. The latter will have borders on the left hand and right hand side.
There is a kde applet, krandrtray that allows you to change the resolution on the fly. Are you using the native resolution of the monitor, or is it different. Some legal resolutions might look stretched or squeezed.
Also, in SaX, there is a place where you can enter the dimensions of the screen in mm. It the relative (V vs H) entries differ from the actual values, then perhaps the aspect ration will be off.
Your DisplaySize entry looks off.
jschiwal@hpamd64:~> echo 'scale=3; 1440/900' | bc
1.600
jschiwal@hpamd64:~> echo 'scale=3; 500/256' | bc
1.953
Notice the different ratios comparing what the pixel dimensions are and what you have for the size in mm.
Also, you don't have a 1440x900 entry in your xorg.conf file. If there isn't a preset for your monitor, you can use the gtf program to generate a modeline. "gtf 1440 900 -x". You can add the mode to your Monitor section. Removing the trailing .00 from the end of the label might be a good idea. I don't know if X would parse it correctly.
Change your modeline to something like:
Modeline "1440x900_56" 99.16 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 930 -HSync +Vsync
Add it to your "Monitor" section.
Add "1440x900_56" to these lines:Modes "768x576" "640x480"
Modes "1440x900_56""768x576" "640x480"
Using 768x576 is probably what is causing your aspect distortion. I would recommend running at the native resolution of your LCD monitor. It will look much crisper.
I'm glad you improved your video. The versions of xmms, xine and mplayer that come with SuSE won't play DVDs or mp3's. That would require propriety software which may not be legal in some countries.
You can go to the http://rpm.pbone.net and make sure the the SuSE Other checkbox is selected in the advanced search.
Then find a Packman package for your version of SuSE. This site will also analyse your system and highlight (with links) any dependancies.
You might also want to google for the mplayer home page. From there you can download a tarball of win32 codecs. This will help play some avi's and wmv's.
