Wouldn't it be better if you could share your knowledge here (on a public forum) where others too can learn and participate, instead of encouraging OP to respond through emails ?

If you Find Linux Is Not for You It's no Shame to Go to Windows, I know Linux is not for Everyone.
Surely Someone around You Could Help you, With Linux if you still want to try it, Or loan You a USB DVD Drive To Install Windows (I would help You with Linux if we were Near-and you will find Most Linux users is the Same.
Whatever You Do Good Luck, May God Bless You and Your Family In This War Time.
Many of the Posters Know what I mean when I say Linux is not Ubuntu-Linux is the name of the Kernel by Linus Torvalds
Linus Torvalds + Richard Stallman = GNU/Linux.
Ubuntu is not Linux- How many Distros is DistroWatch Tracking Now? I think you know what i mean,PhotoShop,PowerPoint, Coke, Words we use.
As for Mint based on Ubuntu, Mint is what Ubuntu Could Be. IT Works and Mint Devs. Send many Fixes Upstream Without Mint and Ultimate You would Have Many more Bugs- Which was the OP's Question. I do think if she could install Mint it will Work on her Dell. Was going to address a lot more But what the Use. To the OP If you want to try Linux I might be able to help by E-Mail.

Sorry for posting something off-topic, but I find your usage of capital letters interesting. I'm trying to find a pattern here, but so far I haven't found one. Is it just random capitalisation?
I am not trying to criticise you or something. It's a genuine question. Whereas most languages have similar rules related to capitalisation, there may be some that are governed by some other rules, eg. AFAIR, In German EVERY noun starts with a capital letter, etc. What do you go by when you decide whether a word should start with a capital letter or not? I'm interested in linguistics. That's the only reason I'm asking about it.
Once again, sorry for posting something off-topic

One of the reasons for the existence of forums is that everyone can benefit from the information posted here. Using emails to solve problems restricts potential beneficiaries to just one person. But then again, you are free to do whatever you want to do:)

I don't think anyone's benefiting from most of what's been posted in this thread. It should have been either locked or had big swathes of posts deleted ages ago.

Fair enough, but any instructions on how to install linux can be beneficial for many people out there having similar hardware specifications.

dugan 07-27-2010 12:57 PM

But this thread was never meant to be about installing Linux. It was meant to be about why Linux has so many bugs ;).

Part of the answer is that Ubuntu has more bugs than some other distributions, because its based on Debian Unstable and it sticks to release dates instead of releasing "when it's done."

Having used Debian Unstable, I'm amazed that the Ubuntu team gets it as usable and maintainable as it is. Twice a year.

You want a distro that usually has fewer bugs? Try Slackware or Debian Stable. The tradeoffs there are obvious and not everyone agrees that they're worth it (I do though).

Timothy Miller 07-27-2010 01:13 PM

It's only based on a snapshot of SID when they first begin. It goes through all the alpha's, beta's and RC's after that, and what releases is a FAR different OS than the snapshot of SID was when they began.

unSpawn, not to be rude but why would I need to move this to a general forum when this is in fact a forum for netbooks using linux? Since I have been told that "lamenting bugs is not at all interesting or productive." I will give a description of my latest problem (again) & see if anyone can help with this because it's not good for the hard/software for me to keep doing a hard close on the system.

Here's the issue:
When I am ready to turn off my system, I drag the cursor up to the upper right hand corner of my top panel when I click on the (in my case a little image of a stick man running), the entire top & bottom panels disappear? I can't click on them, I can't hit esc & them come back up, I've tried right clicking on the desktop does nothing? So, I can't power it down the right way I have to do a hard shut down. Let me say now that I have already tried to right click on the "stick man" icon & selected "lock to panel", this hasn't helped. Any help? Should I just do a full reinstall? Would that even help?

I will say this much, the ONLY person that has been even remotely nice about anything & not given answers edged with sarcasm has been "foodown". Maybe if someone had described any reason why linux is a good operating system I wouldn't have such bad feelings about it. That said unSpawn this

"All Operating Systems have a learning curve, bugs and fixes. So lamenting bugs is not at all interesting or productive. If you really want to enjoy your Mini then you best make a choice: learn how to use GNU/Linux or choose the Other OS."

I find to be offensive & slightly rude the way you basically said "Learn to use your computer or shut up & switch your os", which really makes you no better than zirias. Maybe if people on this site were nicer to "newbies" like myself, we would be more apt to use/ appreciate the Linux family. I am not a MIT computer programmer, I don't pretend to even being to comprehend complex systems the way apparently EVERYONE ELSE on this site can. My father was a supervisor for the Seagate plant in Sunnyvale, CA. & then serveral years later a supervisor for Viking Components plant in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA., unfortunately NONE of his genius rubbed off on me.
Again, thanks in advance for the help.

Maybe people on this forum would be nicer if your first post wasn't trashing the OS that they used. By the same token, go on a windows forum and have your first post be "I have this garbage OS Windows on my system, it's so full of bugs, how do I get a working OS like Linux on?" and guess what you're going to be met with? The same thing as most people here. You come off as a troll, someone who doesn't actually care about getting answers, who only cares about getting people angry for whatever odd reason that it gives them their jollies.

marinegruntswife 07-27-2010 01:59 PM

Ok, having said it THAT way I can comprehend the aggravation. I (again) apologize for "trashing linux", I can see now that some people are in fact "overly sensitive" & I will be VERY careful about said OS in the future.

To reply to a previous poster, I apologize for (in your opinion) being rude by not responding to every person that posted on this forum thread. I didn't intend to come across as rude or anything of that nature.

I have in fact asked the same question TWICE, seeking help, unfortunately you & a few others fail to answer the question or even address it but rather waste time by spitting out your opinions about my "reasons" for being on this forum, i.e. "You come off as a troll, ect."

I don't need to be on a website ruffling feather like some board 12 year old child. I am genuinely asking questions in the hopes that I CAN in fact enjoy this OS because quite honestly to switch the OS would be a costly desicion.

Thanks again & I really am not trying to aggitate anyone or come across as rude. I am new to this site, forum posting in general & linux. So, please, if you can't be patient then at least don't be rude.

Since we have 2 pages of arguing, could I ask marinegruntswife to start a new thread focusing purely on the technical issues s/he has encountered and I will ask for this to be closed - any technical solutions would just be swallowed up by the 2 pages of stuff.

Thanks

I really want to uninstall linux & install windows but I can't because I only have enough space on the hard drive for linux, which is complete trash! Thanks in advance for any help.
My feelings aren't hurt by your statement. I run a Asus EEEPC Netbook with a 4gig SSD and secondary 16 gig SSD. I won't put Ubuntu on this because of the drive space limitations. So I run AntiX 8.5 which even after apt-get dist-upgrade only takes up 1.9 gig on my 4gig SSD drive.

So I understand your frustration. :D

You are new to Linux and are having troubles. Understood here. I would in your case. Buy a 8 gig SD card. Format it as Ext2 File system using Gparted. Make a new Folder called /home in it. Symlink /home from root (/) drive of Ubuntu to /home on SD card. Then space would not be a issue. I realize this is way over your head. I am not a script kiddy or IT guy. Just a Linux using Tattooed Biker Former Jarhead.

Just posting below link to try to help.

Happy Trails, Rok

Not to sound rude, because as you are a moderator I do not want to aggravate you & have you ban me, but now I have to start a NEW thread to discuss the SAME issues I mentioned in the very first post? I am still having an issue with my shut down, I am still having an issue with it saving my bookmarks, having issues with it closing my web browser at random, ect. So which form should I post these particular issues in?

michaelk 07-27-2010 02:19 PM

Agreed, I am closing this thread. Hopefully marinegruntswife will start a new thread
