why do live-cd(s) not work on laptops?

ive tried knoppix, gnoppix, and another i cant remeber name of.
all freeze when it comes to autoconfiguing devices.
any ideas?
after some trouble, was able to get suse9 on it.
redhat never would go, something about the firewire support...

Never had any problems with Knoppix V3.3 and my Presario B1011. It pretty much recognized everything but my WinModem. Some services. like ACPI, were disabled, though. BTW, does anybody know how to make the soundcard work with ACPI on. It only works when I boot with ACPI off.

Does it freeze any specific place? I have a Dell 600m and w/o remastering most of the Live distro's out there, I have to disable pcmcia. You might try disabling various things one at a time, maybe you have a situation similar to mine.

i am using a vaio FR720 and i have tried knoppix, slax (http://slax.linux-live.org/) and pclinuxos 2k4 (http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/index.html) and they are all working. you might wants to try slax as it is based on slackware and the iso is only 187MB.
