Which version of linux would you guys recommend on a 166mhz / 64MB RAM Toshiba Libretto 100CT? The hard disk is only 2GB as well. Thanks in advance for the information.

Depends on how good you are with Linux. If you are really familiar, Slackware and run Blackbox as a window manager. If you are not familiar or are just starting out, Mandrake and Blackbox as a window manager. Stay away from KDE and Gnome, they are to resource hungry for a P166.

I don't know if the Libretto uses standard 2.5" hard disks and if the bios (does it still matter with Linux?) can cope with a bigger hard disk but you might find you could install a bigger hard disk (depending on access to the old one). I've certainly upgraded hard disks on 3 or 4 notebooks before with no bother (except nothing quite as compact as a Libretto).

I have a 10GB IBM harddrive in my Libretto 100CT and it works fine.
Don't be confused by the Libretto's BIOS as it will only show you 8GB no matter
how big a disk you stick into it. this is the BIOS's limitation due to the BIOS APM
functions that write hibernation data to the end of the disk (the 'end' being 8GB
since they thought that bigger disks wouldn't exist in the Libretto's lifetime).
For me it works, I can use all of the disk. my only problems is that I can't get
Mandrake 9.0 to install without going through major antics. but that's because
I lack the knowledge and the material. an external PCMCIA cd-rom drive would
really help your situation, even if it's just borrowed till you have it all set up
with your chosen distribution.
