which linux is it for me?
 

Hi,

I have 3 computers and want to change windows 7 which is good and all (after i delete allot of it) but my brother still can mess it up.

So this means i am new to linux.
I am running this eCafe netbook: 1,6 atom n270, 512 mb ddam 2 800 (planing to buy 1024 more), intel gma 945, 60 gb 5k, bla bla bla. It came with Mandriva 2008. I had some problems using it with the windows software i was used to. I am using it for many things, some old games, internet, translating, matlab, more.

2 off-topic questions, if you would help....
for my old 500 mhz PC, AMD K6 500, 128 sdram (and a 32 mb more but it is old and sometimes i get beeps because of it), 80gb 7k, 32 mb VGA card (i dont remember it), yamaha audio,bla bla bla. I use it for internet and music mostly. And the 3rd PC, 1,8 ghz AMD athlon 64, 3 bg ddram 2 800 cl4, 250 gb 7k, ati x330 128bit version 256mb+hypermemory, bla bla bla. I use it allmost for anything it can do (old cpu i gues).
So what linux is it for me?

to with questions. If that is this forum, you might hear
several opinions.

My understanding is that Ubuntu is one of the easiest distros
to use and has a vibrant support community. That's the one
I would recommend.

anyway i have downloaded mandriva 2010 and will try it from usb, as a test

Mandriva is a good beginner Distro. I also recommend Suse, Fedora, or Ubuntu. They are all good solid distros for new users.

A few things you need to understand though. Linux is not windows, it can do the same things but they are done differently. For example you don't just double click to install a program. Instead you will use a package manager to do this. If you really want to get into Linux, have an open mind and patience. It is different and will take some getting used to since you are coming from a Windows world.

A lot of people say using Linux is easier than Windows, but it is vastly different and there is a slight learning curve.

since i can't get mandriva to boot from usb with 'bootmyiso' and i have 2 exams, a big project, class, tutorias, and all of these in spanish or english (witch are not my mother languages)

Ubuntu actually has version just for netbooks called Netbook Remix. Also, has instructions to make a real, bootable flash drive from iso image (since those netties lack cdrom).

As for the other two boxes, I'd try latest Ubuntu on the athlon and xfce version of ubuntu for the k6 clunker. Get ready to be challenged, even with the above "user friendly" linux distros I suggested.
