Which Linux Distribution works best for Compaq Presario 1220?
Hello, I have a Compaq Presario 1220 Notebook and I am aware that the hardware on this machine is limited. The specifications are: Model: Compaq Presario 1220 Notebook CPU: Cyrix 200Mhz MediaGX RAM: 64Mb SDRAM Hard Drive: 2.1 GB CD-Rom: 20X (Max) Floppy: Yes Which Linux Distribution works best for this limited machine? And which Linux Kernal is the best? |
I'd look at DSL(damn small linux). It's base install is 50MB. As far as I know, the newest kernel should be fine, and it's supposed to have better hardware support. Definitly go 2.6.x series though. I tend to think that 2.4.x is outdated. However, that's not to say that you can't run it, I just follow the train of thought that newer is better(when installing new)

Linux on Compaq Presario 1220
FWIW - I can't say which is best, but I can say that I installed Debian 3.0(?) with the 2.4.27 kernel, and it works. Still haven't sorted out the sound - not a high priority on this machine - and I find it rather slow for surfing on-line. Quite adequate for writing text and small programming. X works nicely. I use a serial mouse rather than the touch pad (which I've never tried to implement), have only 32 Mbyte RAM, and 2 Gbyte HD.
