Hi all,

I've finally got time to try to install linux on my Toshiba TE2300, even though I asked about this last September!

Anyway, aside from the fact that RH9 locks up during install, I still have no idea which kernel I should be using and how to do any power management in linux since I've never installed linux on a laptop before

I have RH9 which I downloaded the 3 discs for, so can I just install RH9 using that and it's included kernel or would I need to download a new kernel specifically designed for laptop use?

The 2.6 kernel has great additions for laptops. It supports processor speed stepping on all the Intel and AMD chips and has a good acpi interface for fan control and stuff.

Alright, I've managed to get the 2.6 kernel. However, my installation CD still has the old kernel in it.

Can I use that old CD set with the 2.4 kernel in it to install linux on my laptop then install the new kernel when I have linux up and running?

If not, what would be the best way of doing it, apart from downloading the whole CD set again

Ya, you can upgrade the kernel after installation without a problem.
