Where is Slocate in Suse 8.2 Pro?

Hi.

Installed Suse 8.2 Pro (over my RH 7.1) on Dell Inspiron 3700. Had some video issues, but no big deal.

Anyway, I am quite fond of slocate. Can't find it on my Suse 8.2 notebook install (oddly enough, on my 8.2 Desktop install, there it is!) Can't figure out what CD it is on (have checked all of them, nowhere tobe found).

Tried to grab it from a RH 9 CD, but said I needed shadow-utils installed, which of course, I already have.

Any ideas? I think it's part of another rpm, but with 5 CDs of stuff to go through, how would I find it?

Thanks.

I've got 8.2 from the ftp install. Not sure if it's professional version or not. Anyway -

`locate` is what you need,

(slocate is just "secure locate", may be exclusive to RH &MDK not sure)

to build your initial locate database (like with `slocate -u`), use

`updatedb`.

To exclude paths in updatedb use --prunepaths='/tmp (and so on)'

man updatedb

How did you get past the video issue? I was installing 9.0 tonight and I am stuck there as it will not start X, it even gives me grief at the shell.

hi slacker9876

please post your hardware esp. video card, monitor

i'm still pretty much at the newbie level but have done a few installs on (different distros)+(different hardware). Maybe I can help.

I bought SuSE 9.0 in the boxed set (personal) and have a strange video problem on one box (nvidia riva tnt2 card). wonder if it's the same issue as yours (i want to start a new thread for that issue actually) it appears to be an IRQ problem...

I must have been really tired to post without info...
The system is a Dell Inspiron 3700 (laptop). I went to Dell.com and looked at the system as shipped page. Unfortunately it does not indicate the video card other than "Accelerated Graphics Port, B1” The display is listed as “Liquid Crystal Display, TFT, 14.1, CRNA/CYP, IBM”

I am installing SuSE 9.0 Pro, it detected the video card as an “ATI Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x”. I am thinking that that will work and is not the problem, I think the problem was the “monitor” and it looks like its an IBM display, which I’ll try tonight.

In relation to your issue I do not think we have the same on but I know I tried a Riva TNT2 on another system and it would not work. I ended up putting an old Cirrus Logic VGA card in there. It works, but no gaming obviously.

HI, hope you solved the problem with your Dell Inspiron; I don't have any suggestions from my own experience, but did find this in groups.google:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...adhouse&rnum=6

...at the end they refer to another post in comp.os.linux.setup with some advanced settings in SaX2.

As for my video problem, it appears that XFree86 4.3.0.1 was beta when burned onto these cd's and has a problem with acceleration and the generic 'nv' driver for Nvidia. So Config setting 'NoAccel' or better yet installing the 'nvidia' driver solves it.
