What linux or BSD or Haiku distribution for eeePC 701
 

Recently I have Mandriva 2010 on my eeePC 701. It works very well, but unfortunately the blue Fn keys crash the computer at ones.

The internet connection is Huawei 220 and Elisa's 3G wireless.

The Fn keys for AAO netbook work great under Ubuntu Karmic 9.10.

I have UNR 9.10 on my Acer One ZG5. Unfortunately I have problems with the internet connection. So I am a little fed up with Ubuntu now.

Recently my eeePC 701 has Mandriva 2010 and the internet works well, but there are problems with Mandriva in it.

Debian has worked perfectly on my 701 4gb since I bought it in feb 2008.

I hated UNR. It made me feel like my computer was a giant PDA.

I haven't had any software related problems for my AAO w/ Ubuntu. In fact, TBH, I've never had a problem w/ Ubuntu.

Arch Linux works about the same w/ KDE. Runs like a dream. The only thing I can not stand is how bad the fonts look. I have tried everything and they still look like crap.

For us netbook users, the JFS file system seems to be an answer. It makes watching youtube videos and browsing the web nice because it uses about 5 % less CPU; 10 % during heavy stress. For most people, it doesn't matter what FS they use, but for netbooks being choosy with your file system can help.

Just remember if you decide for JFS, use it in conjunction with the deadline I/O scheduler and the noatime and nodiratime options enabled.

I also heard there's a Ubuntu distro made especially for the EEE's. It's called, not suprisingly, eeebuntu.

I would try Linux Mint if you are having problems w/ Ubuntu, since it has more drivers, supposedly.

Another vote for Arch Linux. With Arch, you can slim the install down, it will be faster, and it will have all the functionality.

It's not as easy to install as Ubuntu, but it is well documented and Arch has an eee kernel available. I used it on my eee900 and Arch flies on it, and all the function keys work. It's worth the effort if you don't mind doing a little research. The Arch wiki is great though.

Thank you all! I have always hoped to install Arch Linux. Ones I had Slackware and I did not have any problems to get it installed so I will try Arch now when I have one computer free for experimenting!

Hopefully I can send some questions here too, if I do not understand everything needed ...

I use slackware 13 (with lxde) on my toshiba BN100 netbook- and have also installed it on my daughters eee and it works very well. Have also tried the new KDE plasma netbook version on my toshiba for fun-it looks good and also works well. However I am using it is from a USB stick at present and it is much slower.
