Go IBM
I think the best choice is IBM. Every IBM thinkpad I have had is a snap to configure for Linux. The other good thing about Thinkpads is they are fairly rugged so the used market is huge. You can pick up a good T2x for less than $800 on ebay. I just recently got a used X23 for < $600 the machine works great with Linux. Good luck.

while there is NO 100% guarantee on ANY laptop to work, unless you make it yourself.... these are 'in general' a good bet to get and install Linux on. Toshiba and IBM, like one of the posters said here, and Fujitsu.

It works for me using SuSE 9.0 (9.1 has problems, I've downgraded to 9.0). Can't say about fedora and mandy.

I don't know about this but I thought all IBM model use the same kind of hardware (just a newer version for newer model) so it doesn't matter which model you buy. My old laptop IBM A20m work perfectly after I installed the winmodem driver.
