this site can probably give you some good "clues" about some linux-friendly models:

http://www.emperorlinux.com/

also, have a look in the lq laptop HCL, there's several laptops with ratings of "10.0" in there, like for example the dell 5100...

just my two cents...

For what it's worth, I just installed Mandrake 10.1 Community on a Sony Vaio PCG-Z1RSP flawlessly. It runs so well I don't even dual boot any more. I have full media support, high resolution media card support and eben bluetooth. Well done to the Mandrake Organisation!

Make sure you check out the hardware compatibility list here at LQ. It is quite extensive by now and there are a lot of laptops reviewed there. Just click the "HCL" link on the top of the pages here at LQ.

well heres my bit:
firstly my experience with via is very bad, I will never buy something new from them if i can possibly avoid it.
secondly, I have come across quite a few laptops, and so far the only ones I have seen that i havent hated are from ibm. Some of the other laptops are hard enough to get windows drivers for!

Someone should make a thread called "What is the best laptop for me" and sticky it so that everybody would make posts there instead of new posts every single time.

i put suse 9.2 on a presario 2100 and it worked great from the start. im a blatant newbie, so i cant get the wireless to go online and the external monitor/svideo out arent configured but everything else is good. even the processor throttling is good, hibernate works fine, i can standby, but not recover from it.

advantage? they are a dime a dozen. unfortunatly, the fan is noisy.

I will also cast my vote for the IBM Thinkpad. They are more expensive than others, but worth every penny. Considering that IBM sold off their PC biz to another company, I'd say if you want to get your hands on a Thinkpad, act now. -- J.W.
