How do I do this?
Depending on what distro you are using, you would need to start a Terminal or Console session. This is more commonly know as going to the commandline (similar to DOS).

What you want to do is open a console; that's a terminal window in which you can type commands. You did not indicate what you're using for a window manager (KDE? GNOME?) but you should be able to find a console or "terminal" in the menu provided (usually in the lower right-hand corner of the screen).
When you're done with the window, you can type the word "exit" and press the Enter key or just CTRL-D to close it.
My first guess would be Unity. Is there an icon that looks like computer monitor black with a >_ at the top? Clicking that icon will start a console session.
There would be limited use for terminal commands I'd thing in ubuntu. What are you using these commands for? It may be that there is a better more gui newbie friendly way.
Ah okay, well nothing in particular, but (it's explained on another thread http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...14#post4464214) when I was looking online for help on this problem, sites kept telling me to type in commands and I didn't know what they were talking about. If there's a solution that doesn't involve commands, everything would be fine.
