webcam software for dell inspiron

I have got a dell inspiron 1525. I installed ubuntu 8.10 on it. Everything on it works fine except the integrated webcam of 2.0 megapixel. Can anyone suggest a good webcam software that is compatible with my integrated webcam.
Thanks in advance..

since the 2.6.27 kernel v4l2 has been used and alot of the cams that came with laptops and out of the local stores use the v4l1. so please make sure you have installed v4l compat. How
check to make sure it is installed. it will be in the /usr/lib/libv4l/v4lcompat.so
or check your synaptics package handler. or apt-get install libv4l . now you can down load any new programs like xawtv camaroma etc etc. theses are just grabber programs. I use amsn for webcam chat msn and gyachi for yahoo webcam chat. all the neww upated programs in the intrepid repository should be written to use the new compat. the latest snap shot of amsn has the fix.
but if you run into trouble just edit your launcher command to these. Launchers are those litle icons right click then then left click properties and you will see.just edit it.
Quote:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so then the name of the program
like this
Quote:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
or
Quote:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so amsn
I believe the reason for this is because v4l1 is now in the kernel so it is maintained by kernel.org I found that after compiling the new 2.6.28.7 kernel I had an option to build and use it. But that is another subject.

Can you indicate whether it was using Drakeos suggestion that resolved your problem, or post the solution if it wasn't.

As the Drakeo and {BBI}Nexus{BBI} suugested I used vlc and amsn. my webcam works well with vlc and amsn. cheese and xawtv doesnt work well with my webcam. v4linux was already installed in ubuntu (dont know whether it got installed with any of the webcam softwares).
