So, you just need to get a centos iso image on your hd to install to a vmware img right?
Or, having no cd, does vmware see your usb port and can boot it??
And you only have Windows on lappy now, no linux??

so, basically you wanna run XP and Linux as a VHD instead of dual-booting?
please tell all...

you can use netbootcd on my usb here to net-install any major distro

4-NetBootCD-3.0-USB

Also features Tinycore-1.3rc3/1.3 with kexec support( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kexec ) and also great wallpapers!
The Tinycore part is similar to 1.4.2 above with apps(tce) installed-basically a "mini-rescue" USB as it has gparted/partimage/photorec,etc.
NetbootCD can Net-install various versions of all Major Distro's-
* Ubuntu
* Debian GNU/Linux (standard and daily installers)
* Fedora
* openSUSE
* Mandriva Linux
* CentOS
* Slackware
o (note: for Slackware, you may need an alternative installation source, such as NFS or the hard drive)

NetbootCD also supports downloading and launching the latest version of the GRUB4DOS bootloader.

However, I have never used vmware so I can only say it will work off usb to net-install.

is your usb fat32 using syslinux?
ever used linux on usb?
