What kind of virtualization, Xen or VMWare? What kind of laptop, with what kind of network card? What exact error messages are you getting?
If you'd like help, you need to provide complete information. And since you're using RedHat enterprise, why don't you call the support line (which you're paying for), and ask them?

What "failed" error? What is the EXACT error message you're getting? Are you root when you try to restart network services? And since you've got RHEL5 on your laptop, what are you trying to 'virtualize'??
