Video problems, stuttering

Hi

Im new to Linux. Just Installed Ubuntu 10.10.
(Tried 11.10 too, even Kubuntu, Xbuntu and sevarel other distros. Same problem)
My problem is I can't watch movies. They chop/stutter like crazy.
I tried different movies format avi, mkv and more. I tried different players Mplayer, Banshee, vlc.
Same problem, extreme stuttering...
I tried changing the video drivers first via "Hardwaredrivers".
Tried installing NVidia’s latest driver from their website (system froze, only thing working was cursor).
Noticed CPU fluctuating like crazy when playing movies.
Problem mainly exist on 1080p movies.
Im running dual boot with WinXp and movies are playing fine there. So I guess it is not at hardware problem, but a drive, software, configuration problem.
Any Ideas

Dell Latitude D820
Nvidia Quadro NVS 110M
Intel Core Duo T2400 (Dual Core – 1.83GHz)
3 Gb RAM

Ubuntu, with linux 2.6.32-34-generic

Best John

The card is listed as supported, so the nvidia driver should work as long as you can install it:
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...rtedchips.html

The card does NOT support vdpau, so you would use the xv or gl driver for mplayer.

Still no solution

Thanks for the reply H_TeXMeX_H.
The 285.05.09 nvidia driver doesn't work. It simply freezes the system after boot. All the different driver that I can install via "Jockey" (I think its call that) works, but does not enable smooth 1080p playback. After reading up a bit on vdpau, I think the missing support on my graphic card might be the problem. The system is simply trying to render the movie via the CPU which probably isn't fast enough.

1080p is asking a lot, and from what I see of this card:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro_...techspecs.html
it may not be able to handle it.

EDIT:

I can play 720p movies encoded with h264 on my netbook by using multithreading:
Code:
mplayer -vo gl -lavdopts threads=4 -idx

Yes it is. It is quite old, but it works fine when I boot the WinXP patition.

But I will give your multithreading suggestion a try.
