Video on Satellite 4005CDS with Mandrake 9.1

I have one problem and one question, both dealing with the video.

I have just joined your ranks by wiping my hard drive and trying Mandrake 9.1 on my laptop. I installed the OS at my desk with a full size keyboard, video & mouse (KVM). When I wanted to do some surfing elsewhere in the house, I disconnected the KVM and the mouse disappeared and was replaced by a shimmering box. It still worked like a mouse, but it was just this huge box. I rebooted the computer to try to get rid of that and it got worse. When it came back up to my desktop, the resolution had gone down and the screen appeared to be at 640x480 and much less resolution. I tried to change that under Mandrake Control, but that didn't help. Experimentation time - I went back up to my desk and rebooted with the KVM plugged in and the video problem was resolved. I could view it via either or both of the monitors just fine. My problem: How can I boot without the full-size KVM and have normal resolution? If I can't resolve this, I may have to go back to (gasp!) Winblows.

My question beyond that - I think the laptop screen is currently configured to use only 2 MB for its video. Where do I change this? I'd like to configure it for at least 8 MB.
