Question Very New to Linux - :)

Hello,

Just installed my very first Linux on an old Toshiba Tecra8000 and having a bit of a problem, how to navigate. Am using X window right now to get a feel and notice two things. Sound and Wireless is not working.

When I tried to configue Network, no drivers for rtl8180 is found for my linksys wpc11 v4. and with sounds, I go to Administration/soundcard detection, it does not get detected not sure what drivers I need

AM a good techie but not with linux yet so please use non-techie terms until i get use to it.

Can I install from anywhere or is there a specific directory to deposit all files and then run there?

baby step-by-step please will surely help me

Thanks

What distribution did you install? It seems some distros might work better with the card and the sound than others.

Uh... that's not a distribution of Linux. That's the model of your laptop. Where did you get this "Linux" that you recently installed on your laptop? The number you posted is some sort of Linux kernel, though. We'll need to know the distribution (Debian, SuSE, Fedora, Ubuntu, etc.) in order to assist you.

Hi,

Lots of information for compatibility with your particular laptop at these sites. Just scroll down to your model.

So I typed:
gcc -v
and this is what it gave me
gcc verison 4.1.1 20070105 (red had 4.1.1-52)

Also the link you provided
http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/toshiba.html
I went there and it only gave me instructions on how to configure the modem and sound.

I had no problem with the modem but as for the sound:
it gave me this but I don't know where to look for it.

Opl3-SA2/3/x driver

IRQ: 5

I/O: 0x530

DMA1: 1

DMA2: 0

MPU: 0x330

CONTROL: 0x370

Try reading one from a different author. There are quite a few entries for your laptop model in BOTH the sites I mentioned.

Try alsaconf/sndconfig

Try these basic commands 'alsaconf' or 'sndconfig' to configure your sound.

On RedHat system there is a newer command 'redhat-configure-sound' and 'redhat-configure-network'.

Also try 'control center -> sound' in GUI mode.
