USB devices not detected in RHEL5.5 SERVER TIKANGA on a DELL XPS 15 laptop
 
Hello there I have a new DELL XPS 15 laptop installed with RHEL 5.5 SERVER Tikanga and Windows 7.

I am able to access USB devices - pendrives,External drives etc in Windows 7 but not in Linux.


There is absolute no message shown if I insert a pendrive.

I tried accessing the USB devices using Ubuntu Live CD and I can access them easily.

Can someone help me to access these USB devices in RHEL 5.5 Server.

Post the output of lsmod. You are probably not loading the appropriate modules for detection of usb mass storage devices.

As root run:

# modprobe usb_storage

Then attach and, if necessary, power up a usb storage device. See if the device is picked up when running:

# fdisk -l

That should list all hard drives and usb storage devices whether mounted or not.

I don't see the usb_storage module loaded in your lsmod output. In most distros it would autoload upon detecting the connection of a usb storage device. I want to see if manually loading this module will result in usb storage devices being picked up. Also, I'm not that familiar with RHEL but it may simply not be automounting usb devices as a matter of policy. In that case, the fdisk output should reveal if the usb device is detected but simply not automounted and give you the device file for the partition(s) on the device so you can manually mount them.

Hello kilgoretrout I tried doing the steps as you have explained but even then I am not able to get the pendrive detected in RHEL....I guess the matter is with DELL XPS 15 laptop which has USB 3.0 standard..Do you think I need to add any more drivers to make the pendrive accessible on a USB 3.0 standard.

Any other hints or suggestions .....please let me know ..I am just desperate to get this working

I don't think so but I'm not sure. It may be a kernel issue since you RHEL 5.5 is pretty old. Are you running the latest kernel available? Your dmesg output seems to indicate the usb controller is being picked up. Try connecting a flash drive and then running:

$ dmesg | tail

That will give you the last kernel messages from dmesg. I would like to see how the kernel is reacting to the connection of a usb mass storage device. By way of example, this is what I get when I plug in a flash drive to my box:
