Have you checked whether you have any repositories in Yast that it should check for updates?

10.1 can be very slow with updates or even updating the repositories. A newer version should be better, I guess.

If you mean by susie 10.1 opensuse 10.1 it is not supported any more
But sometimes you can buy a DVD with opensuse 10.1 with all the updates.
Those DVDS are rather cheap
We are know at opensue 11.1

You can. Personally I would do a clean install rather than an upgrade because sometimes upgrades can be problematic.

What do mean by opensuse over 10.1 ?
If you mean that you like to install opensuse 11.1 in the same place now occupied by opensue 10.1 yes this is possible.
During the install procedure you have to tell opensuse to do so.
You can also if you space enough keep opensuse 10.1 and make space for
opensuse 11.1
Upgrading will not be my advice

I would second what ronlau9 said. I have never had best of the fortune with suse (or opensuse) upgrade to this moment.

In my opinion, clean install after backing up your data is the way to go with this distro.

Moreover, I remember Opensuse 10.1 had a lot of problem with Yast Online Update. I used the SMART package manager in those days. Despite the fact - as already stated in previous posts - 10.1 has been discontinued and most likely you have to change the URL of the update repo.
