Unplug power frezes computer

When I either plug in or unplug my laptop while I have wvdial running, it freezes my computer for about two minutes. Then my internet connection stops working. If I initialize my modem or wvdial again, it freezes during dialup, and when it comes good, the connection doesnt work, even though it says it is working. So then I have to reboot the machine and then it works fine. Also, even though I have disabled screensaver, after about 5 mins without any action the screen blanks, and once again when it comes back on again, my computer freezes and my internet connection is no good afterwards. I have disabled suspend and standby in my bios, (its a thinkpad r40 2722 gdm thinkpad, only about 8 months old) but I still have this problem. In the advanced part of screensaver I also have power management disabled, so I dont know why the screen is still blanking out. Any ideas or links appreciated.

Thats what shows after I connected the power and then had to reboot because it froze.
