Unable to boot 2.6.5 or .6 on HP Pavilion 5200

I can not get new kernels to boot, something about disk partitition set up. Originally I loaded Mdk 10.0 which seems to work fine, then dowloaded and compiled 2.6.5 and then patched to 2.6.6-rc2. All of htis seems to work fine with no compile errors. I install modules, and make new initrd's but when it comes to boot is has problems, starts with something like

hda:bad access: block ******
end_request.............
Ext.rs .....
hda: bad

and then ends in a kernel panic

I've used the same lilo setup as for 2.6.3 which works fine but stll no luck. At the bottom here I've included f listing of fdisk -l, my fstab and lilo.conf. If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong I'd be most greatful. I know that HP has some weird disk paritiion set up with some of its own info on it, could that be the problem. Someone suggested that under the new kernels that the disk partitions were recongnized as s instead of h, scsi instead of regular ide hda ? Why would that be? If I change lilo.conf to root=/dev/sda then the new kernel might boot (or may not!) and likely the original kernel will not boot so I would be stuck with non booting system again? Thoughts.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jim
