ultimate laptop
if you had unlimated resources (ie your boss was paying) and were buying a laptop that would be dual boot linux/windos, what laptop would you buy?
must have max ram, wireless net (and ethernet), dvd burner, huge screen, opteron processor... m |
i dunno but here in school we use toshiba's: Toshiba Satellite Pro M10 ...
windows works fine :D dunno bout linux, but I'm sure its a very good laptop according to price quality ;) |
I'm about to get a Dell D800 - I'll let you know how it works. :)

so far from searching around i have read very good things about toshiba - but i have not found if they use the opteron processor yet. i have read some good things about Dell, but i also read a lot of not so good things. it seems as if sony is a no go, as well as compaq.
right now i am checking out alienware. i haven't read or seen too much, but a friend said they are pretty good. i'm looking to do intense graphics, 3d modeling, rendering, and animation (photoshop, formZ, maya, 3dstudio max, poser, indesign, etc.). thanks, m |

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 now and I did have to get on the internet and find out how to get the video to work properly. That's how I came across this site! :) |
There are some Toshibas that can even function like TvIo's and many of the high end ones include Nvidia graphics so you're almost guarrenteed 3D Accel.
and they're widescreen |
Ive owned my dell inspiron 4100 for a year and a half now and it works flawlessly with RH 9. Everything from fan, touchpad, to wireless card works like a charm. The only thing that I had to configure was my xf86 config to get my resoulution of 1400 x 1150. And of course the touchpad. Everything was detected by default.
Check out the 8200 series Inspiron. They make 15 inch screens with 1600 x 1200 res if thats what you want. You can mix and match pieces on the laptop till you find the right components. http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ Edit: GAh...! I just read your post about all the video, rendering and animation you want to do. Your probably better off getting a powerbook G4 titanium. The motorolla processor is built for that sort of vector processing/fpu's etc... And OSX IS the free BSD kernel. If your boss is going to foot the bill what in the hell more could you want! |
here is what i ended up getting:
http://www.hypersonic-pc.com/ZX7/ i got 60GB 7200rpm HD 1GB of 333MHz DDR SDRAM wireless, ethernet 8x DVD w/ cd/rw burner and some other stuff they seemed to be rated fairly high, and it had everything i wanted except the AMD athlon 64 or opteron processor. it will be here in about three weeks and i can't wait. m |
i like it . looks very nice
|
i just got a syntax from hugebee (hugebee.com) its top of the line in many ways. im still working on getting mandrake running, but it runs slackware like a charm.
check internetishop.com for decent deals |
Ibm is comming out with a T42 in a week or so. It is the only note book that i know of with 2MB of L2 cash

Everyone's opinion of ultimate will be different. For example I want to be able to carry my laptop everywhere so I don't want a huge screen or dvd to add weight. Right now I run a Dell latituce C400 which is a 12" screen, no removable media drives and weighs 3lbs and is 1" thick with a bunch or ram and a 60G Hdd. My ultimate would be a tablet that is 1/2" thich, weighs 1lb, has a screen that is the same size as an 8.5x11 sheet of paper and can be used in portrait mode, can run for 10 hours on its battery, has 4G RAM and a 200G 2.5" 7200rpm hdd and will act as a cluster node when in range of my home wireless and use another system/server to do part of its work.
