Ubuntu trouble on Acer Aspire 5021

This is my problem:
When I try to shutdown my laptop running Ubuntu 6.10 it will just freeze and the screen fills with purple lines and the sound freezes too.
It all started when I installed Beryl with xgl, and the graphics driver were bugged out from the start. I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X700 card.

Anyone knows about this that can help me? By the way I'm quite a newbie to Linux...

Firtst offf you probably need to do a reinstall and after thats is finishe you should try to get the newest open gl drivers for your ati Mobility chip set video controller.
