Have you...
I am assuming that there is nothing wrong with those copies of Ubuntu; they all pass the in-built media check. The CDs boot live? Has this machine recently been functioning well, that is, there is no grounds to think it has a faulty HDD.
Have you tried any other live-cds? I would try to burn a copy of Parted Magic(my favorite) or GPartedLiveCd and see if you can get one to boot. Then look at your partitions both graphically and with a terminal using the command "fdisk -l"
You can also use the command "lshw" to find out the make and model of the HDD and use google to search for the disk utility for the HDD, then run it to check the HDD. The live-cd UBCD has several utilities.
If the machine boots a partitioning CD, you can use it to shrink, delete any existing partition, or format, making the space and partitions you want to use for Ubuntu and try again.
Good Luck
