Ubuntu on a Toshiba Satellite A55-S306

My room mate has asked me to put Ubuntu on her laptop... how ever I am having some issues.

When the installers gets to the point where it is about to display the partition the install freezes... I have tried both the 9.04 desktop CD and 9.04 alternate CD (both 32bit versions) as well as 8.04.02 Alternate

They all hang at the same point... Any ideas?

Have you...

I am assuming that there is nothing wrong with those copies of Ubuntu; they all pass the in-built media check. The CDs boot live? Has this machine recently been functioning well, that is, there is no grounds to think it has a faulty HDD.

Have you tried any other live-cds? I would try to burn a copy of Parted Magic(my favorite) or GPartedLiveCd and see if you can get one to boot. Then look at your partitions both graphically and with a terminal using the command "fdisk -l"

You can also use the command "lshw" to find out the make and model of the HDD and use google to search for the disk utility for the HDD, then run it to check the HDD. The live-cd UBCD has several utilities.

If the machine boots a partitioning CD, you can use it to shrink, delete any existing partition, or format, making the space and partitions you want to use for Ubuntu and try again.

Good Luck

I'm not sure what the exact issue was but Fedora 10 booted right up and installed on it and she is happy enough with that so I am going to just leave it alone now I think.

Thanks for the input though,
~Jeff
