I have recently been testing Ubuntu netbook remix on my Acer Aspire One A110. I am impressed with it and want to install it. When I try the install it hangs at the point where it asks for keyboard layout. I have tried several times now with the same result. I tried it with the expansion SD removed but same effect. The first time I saw an error message I cannot recall what it said, it offered to report the error then said the error type could not be reported and asked if I wanted to ignore the error in future. I selected yes and now I cannot locate the error - it is ignored but the effect is the same.
I am selecting language English, location Bermuda, keyboard UK.
Did you verify the iso file before creating the CD or live USB stick you're using? If so, try re-creating the installation medium; if not verify the iso file first.
Thanks - tried that but with the same result - with a new USB made I have the error message which says;
program "parted_server" closed unexpectedly.
The USB reports itself OK and Windows XP on my other machine reports no problems. I used Lili USB creator to make it and it reports no problems. Unbuntu loads and runs perfectly on the Acer - I really like it - just want to install it now.

If the version of parted on your USB stick is problematic, it might need to be updated. If you allocated some persistent storage on the USB stick when you put UNR on it, try updating parted before attempting the installation to your SSD.

Thanks for that. I see on the Ubuntu forums that installation with this parted_server fails mesage is commonplace and seems to always involve SD cards. Some people have solved it by taking out additional SD cards on installation. However my machine is purely solid state memory and it begins to look as if Ubuntu won't install unless there is a traditional HD. If I wanted to try and get a revised version of parted_server where and how would I get it and how would I insert it onto the live Linux USB stick in place of what is there? Forgive the basic questions - I am very new to Linux - the last time I worked with command line code was with DOS too many years ago.
Solved.
I researched this on ubuntu forums - it seems to be happening to a few and the common thread seems to be SD memory cards. I looked at previous versions of ubuntu and found no reference to problems. So I downloaded the ISO for ubuntu NR 9.10 and made a bootable USB which ran perectly. Then I tried install and it went through very smoothly. The machine is now running happily on ubuntu and I am starting to learn about it.
