Ubuntu Install 5.1

I am trying to install a Beginning Ubuntu Linux cd on a UMAX 316T laptop. It had a 5G HD with 98 on it and 32M memory. I put in two 64M sticks for a total of 128 (the max allowed), and a 20G HD. When I load Linux it goes fine until after loading the GRUB, I get a screen that says: GRUB Loading stage1.5/GRUB loading, please wait..../ERROR 18. I also have Linux 5.10 and 6.06. 5.10 says it will work with 128M, but I get an error message after the GRUB also. The 6.06 wants 256 Ram so I haven't tried it. Is there a list of error codes? The install version in the heading of this post should be the version before 5.1

http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/user/view/cs_msg/83976, http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=273539.

those two articles should help you out. i'm a newbie too so the only advice i can give is format the drive and use cfdisk to create your partitions including the swap and make the swap atleast twice your physical ram size. also, real quick, does your bios show the full 20 gig drive? something else to consider.

sidenote: you may also want to check into damn small linux (dsl). it should run on your laptop too.

Thanks dogged...I'll check them out today! I have been able to start the install, it formats and sets up the drive just fine, but when it gets done with everything and loads the GRUB, just after that if freezes and I just get an error message of ERROR 2 or 18, depending on what version I've used. I just love it...

just curious to see what happens, try it with the 5gig drive you originally started with. call it a "let's see what happens experiment".

I still have 98 on the 5G and don't want to take a chance of messing it up so I don't think I'll try! It belongs to an elderly friend and she has things on there she wants, so I'm trying not to disturb it. It won't let me install Ghost in order to copy the drive to the new drive for some reason, and I know it was an OEM set-up when she bought it, so that might be the problem. I can save her files, etc., but I'd rather not have to reinstall her cooking software, etc. It is the only other laptop HD I have to play with!

I'm getting a 98 FULL version in a day or two and will see if the new HD will accept it(it won't accept an OEM 98 2nd edition). Then the Linux should load, but for some reason on the new HD it won't finish the install. I'll let you know.
