Ubuntu Desktop 7.04 on IBM A20p Thinkpad

On loading Ubuntu Desktop 7.04 on my IBM A20p Thinkpad which has a WinXP Pro o/s I get the following error message:

[ 193.873427] piix4_smbus 0000:00:07.3: IBM system detected; this module may corupt your serial eeprom! Refusing to load the module!

This installation then continues until the first Ubuntu screen which has an obvious error.
It has part of the screen repeated to the left.
On the right of the screen is the logo and ubuntu
To the left of the screen this is repeated without the logo.

Can anyone help?

Is it possible to load this version onto this laptop.
or
Is a different version needed
or
Is this laptop not suitable?

Many thanks for any replies.

... hmmm... should be OK.

How does it go in live mode?
You may just need to change screen resolution and/or graphics driver.

The piix4_smbus error is proper for IBM notebooks.
