Ubuntu ATI drivers for ATI Radeon HD6370

ALL,

Has anyone had any luck installing drivers for an ATI Radeon HD6370 video card.

This is on a HP Laptop dv7-4285dx. I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I have already tried Ubuntu 10.10 and 11.04 without any luck.

I installed the "restricted drivers" but after doing that it seems to disable the OS of just freeze at boot time with 10.04.

I think you need the drivers directly from ati's site - those are updated monthly and the latter ones have support for the 63xx series.
Make sure you select e-series/c series apu (depending on your cpu) from the list.

Update

ALL,

I went to the site you mentioned. It put me on the ATI/AMD site. I downloaded and installed the drivers and I did not have any luck.

I noticed that my laptop HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx
has the HD Radeon S and not the M. I guess that is because I also have an intel graphics card that is used when the laptop is unplugged to conserve power.

I think that it is going to be a while before I can get the right drivers for it. I really want to run virtual machines 3d enabled and I want to get the most out of my linux install.

See the BIOS options - maybe there is an option to force only the AMD card.

ALL,

I have not had any luck. I looked at the BIOS and there was not even an option to turn off the second video card.
It seems tha HP will only support this laptop with Windows and not Linux.

I will wait for the next interation of Linux ATI drivers hopefully in late May or early june.

Some HP BIOSs let you switch off the discrete card. It can be tricky to find this option. Try this: when you get the first text on the screen (it might say something like "Press ESC to ..." immediately press and hold F10, then immediately afterwards press the A key and hold both keys until you get the BIOS menu. It might take a few attempts to get this to work; the timing is very critical. There might be an advanced tab you can go to to select the Video card. This may or may not work, and if it does work it may only work until the next time the system is booted.

Have you determined that the integrated Intel graphics does not offer the performance you need? It should have 3D support, unless you're doing some high-powered gaming.

dv7-4285dx uses switchable graphics.

There are ways to get switchable graphics going with linux, using vga_switcheroo.

ALL,

I can get the high performance graphics in Ubuntu. The problem is that when I install the proprietary ATI drivers I basically turn my machine into a brick. The next problem is that when I install Windows 7 and windows XP in vmplayer I get the message that 3d enabled is disabled.

So, I feel that the current ATI drivers are not supported for the HD6370s video card that is in there. But I am going to keep looking. I am going to try the switchable graphics because that would be good to try anyway.

Do you know anyone who has this working yet? I can not find them at all.

I havent found anybody running that exact model laptop with linux, but I klnow switchable graphics does work.

Its not just a question of installingthe ATI/AMD GPU drivers, you need to have vga_switcheroo working-

Thanks. I am going to try that. I have never used vga_switcheroo. But it is worth a shot. My guess is that the ATI will be disabled and I will just use the Intel card which is used for power conservation.

Using vga_switcheroo should let you use either the intel video chip or the ATI/AMD GPU.
