Ubuntu and Dell Inspiron 6000

Hi All,

I have a problem. I have a DELL Inspiron 6000 15.4 " Wide Screen monitor, a 915Gm chipset Graphics card.
Firstly I couldn't get Mandrake Linux 10.1 on this machine, so tried installing Ubuntu 5.04. I have been able to install this succesfully. But I am not able to get the display working, even though I use only 1024 X 768, I have even tried using lesser resolutions.

When I run "startx", I am able to hear the sounds while X is booting, but unable to use the same. I even tried the Live CD version of Ubuntu 5.04, but without success. The same problem.

The point is that my wide screen monitor has a native support for 1200 X 800, with its I810 drivers, but I am unable to use the same, even a lesser configuration.

I am thinking that my xorg.conf should have some problems. I also see some errors regarding FONTS in the /var/log/Xorg file.

Please let me know some pointers on how to get this thing fixed.

Thanks,
Rajesh

Try reconfiguring xorg: on debian this would be:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (as root)
Then make sure you select your screen resolution. I am pretty sure it will be this command seen as ubuntu is based on debian.
