Question Ubuntu 12.04 Toshiba Sat P15-S479 Displays Resolution problem NV GeForce FX5200 Go

I'm new to Linux & have a small problem I like to solve!

One week ago I installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop as a dual-boot & still have some problems with my Resolution issue! searched around installed some & downloaded some NVidia packet but it made a total mess of it & I had to reinstall Ubuntu from scratch all over.....

All other things work fine so fare like sound wireless modem etc. including my browser Opera 12.00 except my extensions for Opera.

Is there any way to end up with a better resolution or is there a driver pack for my Toshiba Satellite P15-S479 ???

I'm a bit disappointed with my font quality its like murky not crisp anymore as it was on Windows.....

What driver should I install for my Laptop if there is one? ....
so many options on the net; but the last time I installed a NVidia packet I ended up with a total mess & had to install Ubuntu all over again!

Which one is the correct packet driver I should install or is there a utility to get some better resolution settings?

Its a petty that I can not install my original NVidia GeForce FX 5200 Go software on the Linux system!

Or can I install it; but I may not know how to..... but its for windows installation only I think?? ..... is there any driver software which works with my Graphic card on Linux??

I can not run Ubuntu 3D; but I got it working on Ubuntu 2D only with a Resolution output of 1280 x 800 (16:10).

But there is one small problem I can not solve!! ..... every time I login I end up with a only a half screen Launchbar at startup!

Like this : http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...alf_screen.png

But I played around with it & found a way to at least end up with the full screen, Lauchbar on a 1280x800 resolution>>>

This is what I have to do at every startup >>>
I have to go to Displays setting switch back to lower Resolution of 1024 x 768 (4:3) & then back to Resolution 1280 x 800 (16:10) & it works & shows me the entire Launchbar on a resolution of 1280x800.

My Laptop Details
Toshiba Satellite P15-S479 features a desktop 2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512MB of RAM, a DVD-Multidrive, integrated dual-band Wi-Fi, and Nvidia's GeForce FX Go5200 graphics processing unit.

Graphics Processor
NVidia GeForce FX 5200 Go - 64.0 MB

$ sudo ddcprobe >>>

vbe: VESA 3.0 detected.
oem: NVIDIA
vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
product: NV34 Board - e133-1n Chip Rev
memory: 65536kb

Thanks up front maybe there is a fix for it .......
I tried myself for a week now but no luck & only ended up reinstalling Ubuntu 3 times all over again its not nice after all the setting up & all is lost again.

I know I'm new & stupid but I'm honestly trying to make this work !!

But I'm lost in space right now ......

There is a saying >>>>

Any fool can make things complicated ..... but it takes a genies to make things simple & easy for all!!!!

I Ubuntu Linux for normal Human consumption??

Would a normal Human be able to handle this for long? ..... like I do right now; not giving up yet after all this!!

I would say I have a good overall knowledge in computer issues for more then 10 year on Windows played just about will everything Humanly possible ......

But this takes the cake so fare!!

Now here is Linux Ubuntu 12.04 the future with more then 20 million users ?????????????

Anyway I'm not giving up yet even that I do not know what to do with all this info !!!

My First result being somewhere in the root & out of X Server (whatever that means) I'm working hard for the last week: >>>>>

I have a >>>
/home ..... folder
/host ...... folder
/root .... folder
/cdrom .... folder
/home/home/ ... folder
/home/mario .... account folder
/system .... folder

Where is the freaking 'root'????? >>>> how to find this place???

I have prompts like this & only one account in my system /home/mario folder:
mario@ubuntu:~$
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$
root@ubuntu:~$
$
#

Where is the root they all talking about; what is a X Server which I have to get out of????

???????????????????????????????????????????

Lets start this install:

I have three sets all in my Download folder .... all executable
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.25-pkg1.run
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg1.run

######### OK I'm searching for more info in this wonderful World of simplicity #########

Don't give up just yet. Here are the steps you need to do to install that driver you downloaded from Nvidia.

1) Assume your driver file is on the desktop. (You can put it on your desktop for simplicity)
2) Go to the commandline: (Ctrl+Alt+F1); and log in
3) Stop X server: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
4) Install Nvidia driver: sudo sh ~/Desktop/NV <press tab to auto complete>
5) Let the installer configure your X configuration file.
6) After installation, restart X server: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

If the installer says you need to uninstall the exisiting driver, run the installer with " --uninstall" after the install command. Then run normally to install. Hope that helps

4A. BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you begin the installation, exit the X server and terminate all OpenGL
applications (note that it is possible that some OpenGL applications persist
even after the X server has stopped). You should also set the default run
level on your system such that it will boot to a VGA console, and not directly
to X. Doing so will make it easier to recover if there is a problem during the
installation process. See Appendix H for details.

>>>>>>>>
How do I exit X server in order to install NVIDIA drivers?
I'm trying to install the latest NVIDIA drivers (not the ones provided by the 'Additional drivers' application). In order to install them, I need to exit the X-server and terminate all OpenGL processes.

How do I do that? I've seen many things like 'press ctrl-alt-backspace' and typing 'sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop' but none of them work. I'm using Kubuntu 10.10 and gdm doesn't even exist.

Thanks for any help

###################### well this "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop' does not work ############

######### OK I'm searching for more info in this wonderful World of simplicity #########

Open one of the virtual terminals (e.g. CTRL-ALT-F3)

Log in and entered >>>>>>>>>>>>> "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop"

On non-debian systems you could enter "sudo /sbin/init 3" to enter single user non-graphical mode.

4B. STARTING THE INSTALLER

After you have downloaded the file 'NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg#.run',
change to the directory containing the downloaded file, and as the 'root' user
run the executable:

# cd yourdirectory
# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg#.run

The '.run' file is a self-extracting archive. When executed, it extracts the
contents of the archive and runs the contained 'nvidia-installer' utility,
which provides an interactive interface to walk you through the installation.

'nvidia-installer' will also install itself to '/usr/bin/nvidia-installer',
which may be used at some later time to uninstall drivers, auto-download
updated drivers, etc. The use of this utility is detailed later in this
chapter.

Download the 173.14.25 driver. Give it execution permissions:

chmod +x NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.25-pkg1.run

sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.25-pkg1.run

Be sure you have kernel sources installed, if you dont check the kernels directory from the repository.
Switch to the text user interface running as root init 2. Then login as root, go to the folder where you downloaded the driver and execute the installer with ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.25-pkg1.run
Follow the instructions, they are pretty simple.
After install finish, run init 4 and that should be all.
Post back if you find any problems.

If you're using Ubuntu with Nvidia video, then shortly after first booting the newly-installed Ubuntu, you will be informed that there are propretary drivers available for your system, and you will be asked if you want to install them. Just say yes, let them install, and reboot. The other option available to you is to use the nouveau driver, which is the default (and free) driver for Nvidia video systems. The nouveau driver is perfectly adequate for my needs - obviously YMMV. However, I my monitor does not report a proper EDID, so, to get the monitor to display using its native 1680x1050 resolution, I do use a custom xorg.conf file.

Ubuntu 12.04 ... Ok I'm back after reinstalling everything again

Ok I'm back after reinstalling everything again.....

On one hand I had total success & finally ended up to sorting out this X Server issue & the blacklisting of this Nouveau driver.

For those which are confused as I >>>

To exit ..... X Server do this
Quote:
Crtl+Alt+F1

then write this

sudo stop lightdm

To test if it worked press Alt+F7 >>>>> you should see nothing more then just a blank screen! .... return back to your terminal by pressing Crtl+Alt+F1

To switch X Server (lightdm) back on write this >>>

sudo start lightdm

Anyway then I finally managed that this Pack >>> NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.31-pkg1.run <<< completely installed himself with no more errors right to the end successfully. I was so happy!!!

Then I rebooted & that was it nothing worked not one of my two accounts I created opens no login screen ..... nothing! just some errors showing up on boot-up & I would not know what to do with it or how to revers the problem or how to return to the original last driver. End of the Game!

This is the big problem with Linux ..... if there is a driver playing up its all gone; you have no simple way to restore the last good set up!!!! >>> truly & absolutely needed for Ubuntu Linux. Restore Points recovery to not lose the entire setup files & all els from before!!

Tried for two hours to somehow get into the Ubuntu login screen; but no freaking luck .... all lost again for the 6th time!!.....

So I finally give up & I'm not happy with Nouveau driver which will not give me my full Screen capability!! .....
I can run on up to 1600x1200 resolution on Windows with my wide-screen laptop by using the original 2003 NVIDIA driver supplied with my original computer software.
What I can see is that the NVIDIA driver supplier are very open with all his source code information; so why will it not work on Ubuntu Linux is a mystery for me??

Ubuntu Linux is not for me; but at least I tried to see what it is all about.
>>>
Linux is not made for the simple users still much to complicated for the average man & user .... its just downloading after downloading all the time..... No! No! .... I be back in 4-5 years for Linux.....

But the CD version ability to run from Flash drives & external drives is grate & its a perfect back-door tool to take with you & for Windows in case it ever plays up & you have to do some file repairs to get it working again.

Much better then using a DOS disk boot which still can not read NTFS partition anyway even so there are tools for it to do so; but Linux can get to all NTFS partition files which is nice.

So I will keep Ubuntu Linux on my Flash Drive & on my external 500Gb HDD for emergencies....

My final conclusion:

Don't ever try to customize anything on the original Ubuntu Linux setup & don't ever try to install any new graphic card driver for your system .. waist of time & a never ending nightmare!

Linux Ubuntu is not made for the average user which likes to customize anything on his own with a limited Human lifespan!

To download a package once only so I don't need to download it again & again its a nightmare to work out how to install it.

Yes I know you have the download Center & thats my problem. >>> If I have a crash like I did 6 times I have to download everything again & again..... so boring!!!

I have one nice download of opera-next_12.00.1387_i386.deb with the extension .deb >>> perfect; downloaded this only once & just open my old download with the Download Center to reinstall it >>> very quick & nice!>>> all packages should work like this by default ... one single format & not all these different non standardized manual ways!!!

If all Graphic driver would be based on this download system no one would ever have all these problems!! .... To be honest I don't know why it is not like this???

I got me the download of the font manger & after two hour of reading all over the place I still can not work out how to freaking install it in a simple way or simple user friendly way!! ... truly nuts!!

In Windows you just click Install or Setup thats it!! ..... with Linux I'm just reading pages of explanations how to install a small stupid packet???? ... No Good Sorry!!

To much time waisted on the Net reading about problems & solutions how to set up your basis OS.

Continuous downloading of something or add ons to be downloaded! the original CD version 750mb after some downloads & never ending updates it grows to 4 GB!!!! & the there is no more room & the casper-ws is fully use!

I made on partition once with Ext2 format; but I don't like it because if things go wrong you have to repartition the lot; with the casper-ws file I just delete the file & create a new one & start all over.... much more convinced. Just a petty it can not be bigger then 4 Gb??

No Ubuntu Linux got a long way to go to make it user-friendly!!!

The truly positive thing compared to the Windows system is>>>
Its a great backup system because it runs perfectly from external Mobil devices with no problems if you leave it as is & don't play around with costuming it!

This is the big problem with Linux ..... if there is a driver playing up its all gone; you have no simple way to restore the last good set up!!!! >>> truly & absolutely needed for Ubuntu Linux. Restore Points recovery to not lose the entire setup files & all els from before!!
Alrighty then. I guess you musta got lost.

I was able to fix things in inti3 boot up OK.

Wink xorg.conf file NVIDIA ... the screen resolution Ubuntu Linux

The nouveau driver is perfectly adequate for my needs - obviously YMMV. However, I my monitor does not report a proper EDID, so, to get the monitor to display using its native 1680x1050 resolution, I do use a custom xorg.conf file.

Thanks for your answer!!

I would loved to get it fixed ... the screen resolution is the most important part of the laptop; having it going on half capacity is not a solution & unsatisfactory for me!
Also the speech function from the original Opera browsers does not work on Linux anymore which is one of my absolute favored which I don't like to do without anymore since discovered. I tried the festival installation which I actually got working to readout selected text from anywhere & I give it a 30% quality voice compared to the original Opera TTS voice. Never fund any voice like the original Opera system has only a 15mb file & absolutely perfect with a clear vice like from a TV!!

I was search for someone which has the same computer as I do & runs Linux which may solved the problem with NVIDIA driver but no luck so far & there is nothing from the Toshiba support as far I can see!

Maybe on day someone which the same computer running on Linux will answer my NVIDIA driver problem & I give it another go!

So I will have to stay with Windows system for now!

I actually get the 1280x 800 resolution which is perfectly OK; but my fonts are very bad & not crisp anymore like in Windows & overall its a blurred output; very simulate to the basic Windows driver on the first setup.

Also on ever first login I end up with only a half active screen & a half Lauchbar which is strange; to fix it I have to go to display setting switch to the 1024x786 once & then back to 1280x800 in the same go & all is OK having a full screen active; but this I have to do every startup & has something to do with this original driver from Ubuntu Linux. This was my reason in the first place to get me a more suitable driver but I failed.

I don't have enough knowledge to play with the setting files. Already started 6 times over & now I had sadly enough with playing around.

Yes I was reading about this xorg.conf file in the install instruction.... but I don't have such file in my system for starters & I did not work out where to get one & which one would be correct for my system!

Much to confusing!

I'm new to Linux but still:
This Linux stuff is much to complicated for the normal man >>> I would say!!
I'm pretty good with the basic computer issues; but this Linux stuff gets me totally lost! Same with the Mac stuff total disaster IMO!

Two weeks of trying & tonnes of reading to just get a graphic driver

I have to look at the video latter have to download the plugin again for an hour after reinstall everything.

Man I would not even know what this init3 is or where to find it or how to switch it on if I'm honest!

I'm more then just only lost all by myself on this; I only play with Linux for two weeks to give it a go.

Still can not logically work out why I have a ROOT account with no name showing in the login screen & one more Ubuntu account located in the Home directory being somehow connected to the root but is not the root really & also with no name showing on login; then I have to create my own account name which shows OK & strangely enough the Ubuntu account starts up on autoboot every time with no password request even so I set one for it ..... then I have to log off & back into my own account.

I looked at this grub dual-boot stuff & I'm totally lost in space; not knowing how the hell this works or how to set anything ....

I gave up on grub stuff a week ago; can absolutely not work it out after hours of reading about it!!!???

I will take one quote from my first post>>>>

There is a saying >>>>

Any fool can make things complicated ..... but it takes a genies to make things simple & easy for all!!!!

So many accounts in one OS no wonder 4Gb is not enough; totally confusing every account with there own files so much space taken for every individual account.
Strange system for me! I have to install Opera three time each times it takes 200mb for every account.

Also the group & owner permission drives me nuts & I can not work out how this gksudo-nautilus works; because it does not change the permission on all files in one go & nothing workes if I just copy it over to another account even so I'm presenting the root owner by using gksudo-nautilus. So I have to go one by one file to change permission to make things work???

Well as I say very confused & hard to work it all out just by logical searching & thinking.

Taken me 7 days to just work out how to give every account its own password including the root account. Now you talking about a init3 login?????

Like I say I'm just a newbie on this & its getting a bit boring if you don't get anywhere & things are very hard to work out. A bit sick of reading for hours for solutions & suggestions. I'm on Windows for the last 10 years & just about know every corner of it including the registry. But this Linux stuff gets me truly frustrated at times.

Two weeks of trying & tonnes of reading to just get a graphic driver installed & still no luck ..... that bad for me & I can only blame myself for being so stupid.

Well I'm just a simple man & computer is just my personal hobby.....

I have a grate game which is called Solder of Fortune with very nice graphics but it runs on Windows so I have AGP graphic acceleration which gets created by this software & I noticed the scripting of Ubuntu Linux is very similar stuff so why can I not get the same graphics drivers on Linux!!!

Anyway as I said I'm just new ..... but lose my interest a bit ..... to much involved & I hate reading to much!

I am no genie. Just a average home user GED educated Tattooed Linux biker. I don't expect you to know what I know. So I don't expect you to be able to maneuver through init 3 boot and do what I did since you don't know what init 1 and init 3 boot is let alone use a terminal file manager like midnight commander or a terminal editor like vim or nano or use a terminal browsers like links2 or lynx. I understand that because I had to learn on my own how to do these things.

I get bored easily also but when I trouble shoot motorcycles (my trade) I have to read manuals. Just the nature of the beast. You are used to running Windows. That is something I never did as I only use Windows to tune Motorcycles with DRM software and DRM hardware wiring harnesses. http://www.mastertune.net/

Any ways. This is a readout from my Desktop computer running Ubuntu 10.04LTs with Nvidia card in it.

I upgraded this desktop from Ubuntu 9.10 (using the terminal, I like seeing what is going on) back when 10.04 went final. I don't think 12.04 is bug free yet either.

Release note added:
* Upgrades from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 12.04 LTS do not work using the alternate CD or the server CD as a package repository. It is recommended that users running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS wait for the 12.04.1 LTS point release, scheduled for July, before upgrading. (Bug:988941)
So see. It does help to read things to save head aches later. Just saying.

I aint dogging you. I kinda sympathise actually. I just learned the hard way to read up on things before diving into the deep end on certain projects is all.
I say again. No script kiddie or IT guy here, (just look at my profile)
