Ubuntu 11.04, Unity and NVIDIA drivers problems.

I'm a bit perplexed after trying to get Unity(and/or compiz) to work on a recently installed Ubuntu 11.04.

At the first boot, as expected, I got the message that the laptop didn't support 3D acceleration and Unity was disabled. Fair enough, I said, just need to install the nvidia restricted drivers and I should be set.

That didn't work. The "Additional Drivers" dialog reports the nvidia drivers as "activated but not currently in use", but I'm pretty sure they ARE in use as xorg.conf has "nvidia" as the driver for the Device section, and the nvidia control panel works. I can't access the visual effects tab, CompizConfig opens and lets me change options but doesn't actually do anything and of course, there's no Unity.

Any ideas or diagnostic steps to suggest?

EDIT: oh, and of course I am not using "Ubuntu Classic" at login, but the original "Ubuntu" :)

Read this. Also make sure to set&save proper resolution before logging to Unity session.

Thanks...I managed to miss that page somehow.

Using the support test utility it looks like my Video Card(7300go, sorry for not mentioning it sooner) has been blacklisted at the moment due to this bug.

I'll try using that nouveau experimental 3D driver or unity2D then.
