Two hard drives? Im a noob


I bought a laptop from my friend and it had linux and win xp installed and everything was working fine but it had so much camera software on it I decided to just reinstall windows. ...Well, now i get a prompt that says

grub>

I have no idea what to do..someone? anyone?

are you trying to install just windows or still have both windows and linux?

It doesn't really matter at this point. Both would be nice but whatever's easier. I just wanna use the computer!

unless someone else has a better answer, if you take 15 min. and read this page you will gain a good understanding of grub and can probably fix your problem. possibly you just need to tell grub where the second part is located. hope this helps.

The only thing it helped me understnad was how I dont know anything at all

well you probably want to tell it where your root section is. i dont even know if yours still exists, not sure what kind of install you did.
but it would probably be somthing like
grub> root (hd0,a)
where that is a zero not an 'o' and 'a' is the number of the partition the boot section is on.
since you dont know try
grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
and it should tell you
next type
grub>setup (hd0)
then type
grub> quit
then reboot

if there is a /boot section and you get it setup, you will have to boot to linux and change the setting to be able to bot to windows

I tried that and it said error 15: file not found

i dont know man, sounds like you might be best off booting with a rescue diskette and run like fdisk or something. you should be able to wipe all the partitions on the hard drive with that and start over.
