Turning the trackpad off in Ubuntu with a Dell D610

Hi,
I've got a Dell D610 which has both an eraser-style pointer (like an IBM), which I like to use, and a trackpad at the bottom, which is driving me insane. Is there a way that I could turn off the trackpad so I can run Ubuntu in peace? I'd be fine with a permanent turning off, but I can live with doing a tweak everytime I start up too. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
pt

Welcome to LQ!

Don't know about your Dell, but in my Sony and Toshiba laptops
I can turn the touchpad off in BIOS. Then I use a USB mouse.

I just attached a USB mouse and use it when I'm at home. I can also use the trackpad w/o any problem.
I have both the ps/2 mouse emulation and the tarckball code in my xorg.conf (out of the shelf in my SUSE10.0) and didn't need to do anything.
AFAIK if you have the modules evdev and the USB stuff loaded you will be able to use the TP or the mouse indistinctly.

Dell laptops can turn off the trackpad in the BIOS.
