I suspect that your Acer Travelmate may have an AMR softmodem ?
But what ever it is you have to know eactly what it is (which chipset) ?
So first go here :-

Get the ScanModem Utiliy and as "root" use it to identify your modem.

Then go to the Resources page and see if there is a Driver for it ?

Hope that will be of help ? BTW I got my Aopen Laptop Modem working, an AMR softmodem. And as the Aopen has lots of hardware that is identified as ALi Corp. (ie. Acer) I believe that you will be able to get your onboard modem working ? BUT no garentees :-)

My Acer TravelMate 230 has an Agere Systems AC'97 Modem, now running
nicely under Red Hat 9.0 (kernel 2.4.20-8) once I adjusted (see below)
compiled and make install(ed) driver slmdm-2.7.10 (not later versions!)

This driver is not open sourceso you get the tainted kernel warning when compiled.

For Travelmate etc.
Edit the 75th line of the file amrmo_init.c
from: #define PCI_DEVICE_ID_ICH3 0x2486
to: #define PCI_DEVICE_ID_ICH3 0x24C6
