Trouble with ATI IXP on HP/Compaq nx9110

Hi, I'm not exactly a linux newbie, but i'm not a pro either... I've recently purchased a laptop and have installed Slackware 10 on it. I've had nothing but trouble with getting the sound chip to work (ATI IXP 150), i'm using the 2.6.7 kernel. I have all the standard modules installed and support compiled into the kernel.. sound, soundcore etc etc.

with the snd-atiixp module I get timeouts. I installed alsa from scratch with little difference to the soundcard actually being detected. running ./snddevices created the devices and i was able to use the soundcard but it was skipping and choppy sound, totally unusable. After i rebooted and try to use the sound again without using ./snddevices first, it would do nothing.

I've run through as much documentation as i can find on the chip, alsa's documentation was that much help either... I've been looking for days and days, if someone has managed to get the chip working properly could they please either email or just paste what was done here.

Thankyou.

Why don't you switch to Fedora 2 or suse 9.1 ?
i have no sound problems with these distributions on my nx9110.
