I have a HP pavilion ze5500 with a 60GB Fujitsu MHS2060AT HDD that is filled up with one NTFS partition. I am trying to resize it and free up about 20GB of space for FC6 but I keep running into problems apparently because I have a bad sector. I have been using NTFS resize program from the GPARTED live CD, and from a couple of other live cd's but they all complain about I/O errors. I ran chkdsk /r many times but nothings working. I need to keep XP on here so what else can I do to shrink down the partition?
All those tools use ntfsresize, and as you found it generally won't allow the resize if it finds inconsistencies.
It can be forced, but I wouldn't advise that personally.
Distribution: Ubuntu, Knoppix, any I can get my hands on!

I doubt this is the issue, but just to throw it out there, I know that you have to properly shut down Windows to resize the partition, you can't just press the power button. Gotta click "start, "turn off computer" then hit restart, and let it do it's thing.
After backing up data, running Chkdsk /f, Chkdsk /f /r, and rebooting twice, I went into GPARTED and using ntfsresize -b -f -s 20G /dev/hda1
I get something like this:
Error reading $Mft records : I/O error
failed to open extent inode: I/O error
failed to map extent inode: I/O error
100% completed
accounting clusters
cluster accounting failed at #### (Hex): extra cluster in $bitmap
filesystem check failed: Totally 5689 cluster accounting mismatches
Error NTFS file system is inconsistent
Then is says to use chkdsk /f
Have a look here - download the liveCD and burn it as an image.
Boot that, and it'll look very similar to Partition Magic. The reason for using a liveCD is that it ensures you aren't using (or mounting) the partition(s) you are going to resize.
